Is Your Brain Making Weight Loss Impossible & Could Gratitude Be The Missing Link?
Jul 28, 2024Ok, my beauties, here’s the skinny on sustainable weight loss and our brains. The thing is, our brains LOVE to solve problems. If we don’t give it an intentional problem to solve, we can start to operate on auto pilot ruminating and trying to solve the same ‘problems’ over and over again, with no real solution in sight. This can show up in a number of different ways in our lives, really, whether it’s with eating the ‘right’ foods in the perfect amount, working out, obsessing about a partner or family member that we’d like to change, to worrying about our kids, to hyper-focusing on a job or a boss we wish was different and so on and so forth. We have these problem ‘loops’ that we hyperfocus on and yet, at the same time, the problems persist and they never get solved. What happens is, we end up jumping from diet to diet, fad to fad, without addressing the biggest influence in the result in our lives. Our brains. When we have a peaceful mind, we can actually lean into finding sustainable and lasting results.
Now, I’m not just talking about thinking positive. That will only get us so far, especially if we never actually honor our feelings or where we are at emotionally (hello emotional eating!) I’m talking about learning how to meet ourselves where we are at, processing emotions and THEN actively reframing our thoughts around our experiences and our bodies so that they are for us, versus against us. Think about it like this. You have two people experiencing the same weather and climate…rain and 50 degrees. One person sees the rain as an obstacle, a hindrance for working out and this makes them agitated and annoyed, so they emotionally feel uncomfortable which makes them unmotivated, which disconnects them from the desire to workout, so they say forget it, I’m annoyed the weather is not cooperating. In the end, they actually feel worse not just because it’s raining, but because they didn’t keep that promise to themselves, working through an obstacle and then judging and seeing themselves as maybe lazy, uncommitted and upset with themselves and before you know it, since the day is already been compromised might as well eat all the cookies and treats they promised themselves they would not eat today. On the other hand, the other person sees the rain and temperature and an opportunity for a rebirth or cleansing of the earth and/or the soul. They are thankful that the temperature is not 100 degrees and humid like it is in the Summer. They feel inspired, energized and motivated and thus working out and keeping that commitment feels so much easier and they end up keeping that promise to themselves. Do you see and feel the difference?
Our thoughts affect our feelings which affect our actions which control our results. If you are thinking like a woman that doesn’t like taking care of her body and has no control around certain foods, you will inevitably prove yourself right, over and over again. Thus, your brain and the thoughts you are having and not reframing, keep you stuck and spinning. The good news is you DO have a choice and it all starts with gratitude, not lack. Rewiring your brain and starting from a place of gratitude will not only get you results, but it will also bring true joy. With gratitude, the possibilities are endless.
