Release and Surrender To Lose The Weight For Good

Release and Surrender…

I have a question for you. When you are trying to lose weight and feeling stuck, how do you feel? Anxious? Fearful? Stressed? Worried? Feeling out of control? Defeated? Overwhelmed? All of these? What about when you’re simply trying to maintain your weight? All of the same? Well, you are not alone. Many of us aren’t experiencing feelings of excitement or inspiration when the ‘going gets tough’ OR when we start to feel like losing weight or maintaining our weight must occupy the majority of our thoughts day in and day out in order to ‘be in control’. It becomes draining and exhausting and downright annoying. No wonder why so many women say ‘screw it’, give up or go back and forth on the ‘diet’ or macro counting train throughout their entire lives. Generally, when we want results, most of us tighten the grip. Meaning, we start to obsess even more because we think that’s what it takes to lose weight. To ‘be in control’, we have to be hyper-aware or obsessive to a degree and it has to be ‘hard’. But, what if. What if you loosened the grip instead? Stopped holding really tightly onto the outcome of your sustainable weight loss and health journey. Stopped focusing on doing everything ‘perfectly’ and just started to live into some faith and trust. Faith and trust with your body and your ability to care for yourself in a balanced way to lose weight permanently without a time stamp.

Think about it like this. You meet someone and you are in the beginning of a new relationship. You may be way past this and you may have never been in a particular situation like this, but humor me here and just imagine. You feel like you really hit it off, and you start to get excited. You start talking regularly and start to date regularly. Before you know it, you start thinking about your future together and what that could look like. You get even more excited. You start calling them more often, but also, simultaneously, start to worry and hyper-focus on the fact that maybe they don’t like you as much as you like them. You start to get unconsciously a little needy and desperate. Your confidence dwindles and your energy starts to get engulfed in the negative thoughts and maybes. The other person starts to feel the desperation and is put off. It feels heavy on them and you. It starts to repel them and you don't even realize it's happening!  This is exactly how it feels when we put that pressure on ourselves to lose weight. It becomes unattractive and uncomfortable to us because of the pressure and stress it puts on us. Expectations and needy desperation will always feel heavy and hard.

What about this instead? The next time you start to feel desperate or defeated in your health or weight loss journey, try this. Relax. No really. Take a deep breath and settle into the anxiety and discomfort. Acknowledge your thoughts, but don’t jump to finding solutions or jump into any action. Chill out. Just let the thoughts and anxiety pass through you. When we relax and lean into faith, we then have the capacity to change and grow. When we don’t have faith and peace, making changes for ourselves or decisions that serve us is very difficult. So, the next time you start to get really anxious when you’ve hit a weight plateau or you’re not getting the results you desire in the time span you expected, or you’ve lost the weight and now you just want to enjoy it, just breathe, relax, and have faith. Then make a decision where to go next from this mental space. You are in total control. Let’s work with our bodies not against them.
