The Diet 'Doom Loop'

Maybe you can relate...

I can remember countless times in my own health and weight loss journey, reaching what I thought was my "goal weight" – only to find that, that sense of security and peace I was longing for, still felt elusive.  Like, it was still this destination I had yet to reach.   Peace and security of reaching my goal weight still felt ‘not enough’, and that I was still not enough.  Instead of feeling confident and empowered, I was consumed by overwhelming fear – fear of losing control, fear of gaining the weight back, fear of never being "worthy”, subconsciously.  Fear that this destination of weight loss was only temporary and that at the heart of it all, I would forever have to struggle and/or work  really hard to maintain my weight loss.  That, no matter what, my brain would forever have to obsess and hyper focus about my body, working out, macro counting and eating the ‘right’ foods in the perfect portions. I was so disconnected from my body, I had no idea what it was like to actually live into my body as a naturally, healthy fit woman and not to mention, how to tune into my natural hunger cues. 

Looking back, I realize now that my healthy journey was fear-based from the start. I was so fixated on reaching a certain number on the scale that I lost sight of what truly mattered – my own well-being, both physically and emotionally. And, when I finally reached my goal weight destination, it was anything but effortless. The constant fear of slipping up, of veering off course, made the journey feel like an uphill battle.

But here's the beautiful truth I've come to realize: true transformation begins within. It's about shifting our focus from fear to love, from restriction to nourishment, from control to surrender. It's about embracing our journey with an open heart and a spirit of curiosity and wonder.

So, my beautiful friend, let me offer you some soul-nourishing wisdom gleaned from my own journey:

  • Embrace your journey, even the bad parts: Your path to wellness is uniquely yours, filled with twists and turns, highs and lows. Embrace every step of the journey, knowing that each moment is a gift to be cherished and an opportunity to get to know yourself in a deep, never before explored experienced place.
  • Release the need for impossible perfection: You are not defined by a number on the scale or the size of your jeans. Let go of the illusion of perfection and embrace your beautifully unique body self with love and compassion.  Focus on your uniqueness, your beauty, your gifts, right now in this moment, and decide on purpose, to be your best self, not the idealized version of someone else you compare yourself to. 
  • Find joy and be grateful in the present moment: Happiness is not found at the end of a weight loss journey; it's found within the depths of your own heart. Find joy in the simple pleasures of life–time with family,  the sun on your back, an ocean breeze, a breathtaking sunset, a heartfelt conversation with a loved one. 
  • Learn to trust your body: Your body is a wise and intuitive guide on this journey. Listen to its whispers, honor its needs, and trust in its innate wisdom. Your body knows what it needs to thrive and listen when those red flags are waved– trust in the knowledge you’ve already accumulated and then listen to its wisdom and surrender to its guidance and if needed, get support from a coach who can help you tap into it fully.
  • Cultivate self-love: Above all else, love yourself fiercely and unconditionally. You are worthy of all the love, happiness, and abundance that life has to offer. Cut out the negativity of your own thoughts or the things around you that bring your energy down.  Embrace your unique journey with an open heart and a spirit of love, knowing that you are enough, just as you are.
